We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Dental Nurse to join our team at our Wellawatte, Colombo 06 clinic. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to grow within a progressive and technology-forward dental practice.

Role Summary
The Dental Nurse works closely with the Dental Surgeon to provide high-quality chairside clinical assistance and to maintain an efficient, safe, and welcoming clinical environment. The role spans clinical duties, patient management, instrument management, and administrative support at the front of the clinic.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Chairside Clinical Assistance
  • Prepare the dental surgery, operatory, and all instruments and materials in advance of each patient appointment
  • Provide skilled four-handed chairside assistance to the Dental Surgeon during all clinical procedures — including examinations, restorations, extractions, root canal treatments, crown preparations, implant placements, and cosmetic procedures
  • Pass instruments, mix dental materials, and manage suction, retraction, and lighting throughout procedures
  • Prepare and handle impression materials, temporary crowns, and other clinical materials as required
  • Assist with the placement of matrices, wedges, and other isolation and restorative devices
  • Monitor and respond to the patient's comfort and wellbeing at all times during treatment

Infection Control and Sterilisation
  • Decontaminate, clean, sterilise, and store all dental instruments in strict accordance with infection control protocols
  • Prepare and maintain autoclave records and sterilisation logs
  • Ensure single-use items are correctly disposed of following each procedure
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organised clinical environment at all times
  • Manage clinical waste disposal in compliance with applicable health regulations
  • Ensure personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn correctly by all clinical staff and patients

Patient Care and Communication
  • Welcome and receive patients in a warm, professional, and reassuring manner
  • Prepare patients for treatment — including seating, gowning, and providing pre-treatment information or reassurance
  • Provide post-treatment instructions to patients as directed by the Dental Surgeon
  • Assist patients who may experience anxiety, discomfort, or special needs
  • Accompany and assist patients to reception following treatment

Dental Materials, Equipment, and Stock
  • Monitor stock levels of clinical consumables, materials, and pharmaceuticals; initiate reordering in a timely manner
  • Receive, check, and store incoming clinical supplies and equipment
  • Maintain dental equipment in good working condition; report faults or maintenance requirements to the Practice Manager
  • Assist in the maintenance and calibration of dental unit waterlines and suction systems

Dental Laboratory Liaison
  • Prepare, package, and dispatch laboratory work (impressions, models, prescriptions) to the dental laboratory
  • Receive and check completed laboratory work (crowns, bridges, dentures, aligners) upon return
  • Maintain accurate records of all laboratory jobs sent and received

Reception and Administrative Support
  • Assist with patient scheduling, appointment booking, and reminder communications when required
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, treatment notes, and consent forms
  • Handle patient enquiries at the desk with professionalism and courtesy
  • Assist with end-of-day clinic closing procedures

Working Hours and Overtime
  • Standard Hours:  8:30 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday to Saturday. All clinical staff are required to remain on duty until the last patient of each scheduled session has been attended to.
  • Weekly Off:  Sunday and all full-moon Poya days.
  • Overtime:  Work beyond 6:00 PM will be compensated at the overtime rates set out below.

Standard Working Hours (8:30 AM – 6:00 PM)
Rate: hour Basic rate (1×) 
Example: Rs. 1,000/hr

Overtime Window 1 (6:00 PM – 7:30 PM)
Rate:  1× basic  
Example: Rs. 1,000/hr

Overtime Window 2 (7:30 PM – 9:00 PM)
Rate: 1.25× basic (+25%) 
Example: Rs. 1,250/hr

Late Overtime (After 9:00 PM)
Rate:  1.50× basic (+50%)  
Example: Rs. 1,500/hr

Note: The 25% and 50% overtime premiums are cumulative steps above the basic hourly rate. All overtime must be authorised by the Branch Manager or Dental Surgeon-in-Charge. Overtime calculations will be based on the employee's confirmed basic monthly salary divided by 240 standard working hours.

Qualifications and Requirements

Essential
  • Minimum G.C.E. Ordinary Level passes including Science and/or Biology
  • Completed or currently enrolled in a recognised Dental Nursing / Dental Surgery Assistance certificate or diploma programme
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon appointment)
  • Good command of Sinhala; working knowledge of English is an advantage
  • Ability to travel conveniently to Havelock Road, Wellawatte, Colombo 06 on a daily basis

Preferred / Advantageous
  • Previous experience as a Dental Nurse, Dental Surgery Assistant, or clinical assistant in a dental practice
  • Familiarity with digital dental X-ray systems and dental practice management software
  • Experience with CAD/CAM, zirconium crown workflows, or dental implant procedures is a distinct advantage
